For the launch of Fortnite season 9, developer Epic Games has decided to vault a number of weapons and items and to only add one brand new gun for the season launch. As part of Fortnite‘s Season 8 Unvaulting event, players will have access to the unvaulted Drum Gun, and a new Combat Shotgun has been added as well. A few other adjustments to weapons such as the Boom Bow and Tactical Shotgun were also made.
The new Combat Shotgun is semi-automatic, holds 10 shells, and fires 9 pellets at 73/77/81 base damage. Its headshot multiplayer is 1.7, and it will be available in Rare, Epic, and Legendary variants. The Tactical Shotgun received a buff in base damage, whereas the Boom Bow was reduced in availability by about 10%. Fortnite also unvaulted the standard grenade.
In exchange for the aforementioned changes, Fortnite players have lost the following weapons to the vault: Clingers, Pump Shotgun, Scoped Revolver, and Suppressed and Thermal Assault Rifles. The most notable gun to be removed is the Pump Shotgun, which developer Epic Games saw fit to give a full explanation for. In order to make season 9 feel vibrant and new, the company removed the Pump Shotgun because it accounts for 26% of all eliminations in the battle royale title.
The company also stated it was looking into balances for Fortnite‘s Pump Shotgun, thereby suggesting it will return at some point. In the meantime, the Combat Shotgun was introduced to compensate, though it remains to be seen if it reaches the popularity of the Pump Shotgun. Weapons are not the only things removed for season 9, however, as several Fortnite items have also been removed.
These include Buried Treasure, the Poison Dart Trap, and Balloons. The first item is to be expected with the shifting theme of the season, but many may miss the balloons. One could argue that they were one of the most effective mobility items introduced in previous seasons, and were quite popular in the battle royale title. The most logical explanation seems to be that it somewhat clashes with some of the new mobility options in Fortnite, such as the slipstream tubes. Regardless, Fortnite season 9 is finally here.
Fortnite is out now for Android, iOS, PC, PS4, Switch, and Xbox One.
